- Gather all your supplies.

- Set the sweet St. Patrick’s Day rainbow out for your little leprechauns to enjoy on St. Patrick’s Day!
How Cheap This Treat REALLY Is

Colorful + Exciting 3D Valentine Art Inspired By Fun Pop Up Book
I’ll be honest, friends… We have a lot of seasonal books in our collection. Often, when a holiday rolls around and I hit the bookstore, I feel like I’m not finding much I need to pick up. I was pleasantly surprised on a trip to check out Valentine’s Day books recently. I came across a gorgeous, colorful, and exciting book themed around love. (And bonus, it’s bright pink!) After thumbing through it, inspiration for a really fun art project for my boys came to mind quickly. Read on to learn more about this special book, and check out the 3D valentine art it inspired!

Reading (And Loving) This Pop-Up Book
David A. Carter created this beautiful book, I Love You. It’s a short, quick book in terms of text. Each spread uses a metaphor to describe your loved one beautifully. The true magic of I Love You lies in the imagery… Stunning, modern, and vibrant cut paper pop-ups that add excitement and movement to each page. There’s a mix of simplicity and wonder in the illustration style- the pop-ups truly draw readers in. The simplicity makes it feel approachable for kids to tackle a similar creation. Each page features a heart in some way, adding a seek-and-find element to the book that young readers love.
Creating Fun 3D Valentine Art
My youngest especially had fun working on this 3D valentine art project with his Nana. Set up is simple. The supplies can be as varied or minimal as you’d like to provide. Kids get some great fine motor practice while being creative, making it a perfect choice for young fingers!
Supplies:
- Styrofoam blocks.
- Chenille stems.
- We grabbed an assortment of Valentine’s Day inspired colors and textures. But drawing from the images in I Love You, any color scheme works well.
- Other ‘poke-able’ items.
- Craft/floral picks, toothpicks, artificial flowers, straws, etc. are all great options.
- Hearts.
- We used some ready-made craft foam hearts, but paper, felt, bead, or sticker hearts would also work well.
- Glue or tape, if your hearts are not already equipped with adhesive.
- Scissors.
Instructions:
- First, grab a piece of styrofoam.
- Encourage kids to create their own 3D valentine art similar to what they saw in I Love You, by sticking the crafty items into the foam.
- Kids will love seeing how to twist chenille stems together, or bend them to interact in different ways. Encourage them to use some shorter and some longer crafty items and mix things up in a way they like. Maybe a chenille stem twisted into a spring bounces a fun way? It’s about hands on creative experimentation. You’ll love seeing all the problem solving and trial + error that goes into these creations!

- Add the hearts for some extra love.
- Share your 3D valentine art (and maybe a pop-up book or two) with someone special this Valentine’s Day!
We don’t have a lot of pop-up books in our home library. Do your kids have favorites? Let me know in the comments which stories I need to check out next!

New Mom, New Year Essentials Made Easy With BabbleBoxx
Although I’ve mentioned it on some of my social media platforms, I haven’t written too much on the blog yet about our new baby on the way! (Surprise if you’re just finding out now!) Little boy #4 will be joining our family in early March, so we’re in the homestretch now! Although this baby isn’t my first rodeo (so to speak), it’s been a few years since we prepared for a newborn around here. Must-haves and new mom essentials are always changing, so I’ve busy researching, learning, and stocking up on all we’ll need. Keep reading to check out some of my favorite new mom essentials for the new year!
Disclaimer: This post is sponsored by BabbleBoxx.comNEW MOM ESSENTIALS FOR THE NEW YEAR
Peace Of Mind
I know, a post about new babies really doesn’t need to get too heavy. And I promise, I don’t want to drag any of you down. But we’ve got to talk about something a little serious, because, let’s face it- starting a family can be serious stuff. No one wants to think about it, but the truth is, now is the perfect time to start researching life insurance. Hear me out, here. I know, you’re feeling young, and pretty healthy right now, and thinking the need for life insurance is years away. But the benefit of purchasing now is that it’s easier to obtain coverage, and rates are lower when you’re young and healthy.
And although new babies make budgets tight (all that stuff certainly adds up), I’ve actually learned that life insurance coverage is not nearly as expensive as I thought. You and/or your spouse may already have coverage through your employer, but often, that policy ends if your employment changes. Policies through work also not likely to cover as much as you need- it would be heartbreaking for your family to be left in a financial lurch at an emotionally devastating time.
When we first started to consider our life insurance options, my husband and I were SO overwhelmed. Luckily, we found Nationwide! They’ve been so helpful and informative throughout the entire process. The Nationwide website has tools and calculators that helped us consider cost, coverage, and how we could make the purchase work. Don’t let the figures or facts stress you out- it’s time to adult a bit, and Nationwide can help. Head online to check out information about a life insurance policy, or grab a life insurance quote!
A Little Self Care
Listen guys. Pregnancy is hard. The newborn stage is hard. And motherhood itself is, well, hard. There’s nothing wrong with finding products you love that allow you to indulge in a little bit of practical self care. (I’m not talking about spa days and mani/pedis here my friends!) During this pregnancy, I’ve been adding a little bit of luxury to my usual skin care routine, and it’s the perfect little touch of self care to help me feel better about my skin (without feeling guilty about taking time away from my kiddos). I know it’s going to be just as helpful when the next little one arrives as well.
Vichy Aqualia Thermal Gel Cream is an amazing gel moisturizer that has been SO rehydrating during this harsh winter weather. It’s the perfect day time moisturize for normal or combination skin, and lasts around 48 hours. The Aqualia Thermal Night Cream delivers similar benefits in an overnight product, and I couldn’t love it more. If you’re interested in trying these refreshing, paraben-free products out for yourself, Vichy is offering 15% off + free shipping until 02.28.2019 when you use discount code ‘Babble19’. Be sure to grab yours soon!
Nursing Essentials
Guys, I discovered Bamboobies brand nursing goodies when I had #thelittleone 3 years ago, and quickly became obsessed with what they had to offer. (Those heart-shaped nursing pads are seriously LOVE!) I’m lucky to already have a good supply of pads at home, so for number four, I’m thrilled to have a new Open Nursing Shawl and their Boob-Ease USDA Organic Nipple Balm.
The nursing cover is incredibly versatile. I can use it while holding or wearing the baby, and because it’s black, it matches nearly everything, no matter how casual or formal. This shawl is knit from soft bamboo rayon, so it’s lightweight and comfortable. I love that it won’t scratch or irritate either of us. The nipple balm is certified organic, and also lanolin free, so it’s totally safe for nursing without needing to be cleaned off. It works double duty for chapped lips and patches of dry skin as well as cracked nipples- multi-tasking at it’s finest!
And bonus! Bamboobies is offering my readers a 10% off coupon for an Amazon purchase of a 2-pack of nipple balm. (While supplies last; ends 02.06.19; limit 1 coupon per customer.) If you’re looking to stock up, be sure to grab yours from the link above!
Some Serious Support
Every mama knows that our bodies undergo some major changes throughout pregnancy and the post-partum period. Aside from the obvious belly transformation, our breasts are in a constant state of flux for at least a year. That’s why it’s so important to have a supply of supportive, comfortable nursing bras available. These Playtex nursing bras are some of the best I’ve come across in years of trying to find the right bras.
The Playtex Nursing Pretty Shaping Foam Wirefree Bra is definitely my day-time go-to. The light foam keeps me fully covered. Plus the absence of underwire is so important when I’m engorged with milk. The ‘quickstrap’ openings make it easy to feed baby on demand. A comfortable bra for bedtime is so important towards the end of pregnancy, and early in the post-partum period. The Playtex Nursing Sleep Bra is a new mom essential for me, as I can sleep comfortably with breast pads in the hidden pockets until my milk supply has fully regulated. Both styles are constructed with Cool Comfort™ technology, so you’re always cool and comfortable.
Feeding Foundations
I know, it seems like there’s still a long time until my newest squish will be ready for ‘real’ food. The truth is, those first 6 months fly by in a flash! With my oldest, I researched feeding options before he was even born, so it’s really never too early to start thinking about it. Whether you opt for traditional purees or decide to try out baby led weaning, there’s a place for Sprout Stage 2 Pouches in your pantry!
These organic baby food options are full of plant powered protein in a variety of interesting flavor combinations, to keep little foodies happy and healthy. Flavors like apricot banana chickpea fig and strawberry apple beat red beans mean your little ones get plenty of healthy protein (2 grams!) from organic sources, with no added flavors, colors, or sugars. The pouches are convenient to tuck into a diaper bag, making them the perfect choice for feeding on the go. Keep your eyes peeled in 2019, because Sprout is gearing up to launch a ton of new products for babies and toddlers.

3 Simple Ways To Take Control Of Screen Time Without Going Crazy
Few topics are as hotly debated among parents as the issue of screen time. Do you control it? Let kids make their own choices? Find some happy medium? We’ve all seen countless reports contradicting one another. Some suggest strict limits, and others suggest parents lean in to their kids tech-y interests. At the end of the day, I believe each family needs to make the decision that works best for them. (After all, we’re all just doing the best we can!) We take a pretty middle-of-the-road approach to the issue of screen time, and so far, it’s working well for our family. Today, I’m sharing the 3 simple tips I use to take control of screen time at home without totally losing my mind! (And how our Fire HD 8 Kids Edition Tablets are helping with the task!)
TIPS TO CONTROL SCREEN TIME WITHOUT LOSING YOUR MIND
Keep Screen Time Rules Simple
We’ve all seen the Pinterest-worthy screen time systems that use charts, tickets, tokens, and more. I have to be honest. I have some Pinterest-mom-envy about the people who can make these work. But the truth is, it’s too complicated for my home. We need systems or rules that are easy to implement, and simple to enforce. So we’ve set up some very broad, simple screen time rules, that so far seem to be working for us. If you’re not up for an elaborate system, check out the easy rules we use to make screen time work at home.
Our SIMPLE Screen Time Rules
- No screen time after dinner.
- We eat dinner as a family, and generally, screens go off for the last hour or so of our night. This gives the boys time to unwind, play together, talk to us, and get settled for bed. There are exceptions of course, for occasional movie nights, etc.
- If mom or dad say screen time is done, you listen.
- The boys know the rules. If behavior is poor, chores are ignored, etc, mom and dad reserve the right to stop screen time. If they want to head back to screens later, they know it’s time to listen without an argument. 9 times out of 10, we’re pretty successful with this rule. (Everyone whines occasionally, they’re kids!)
- Family gatherings are not a time for screen time.
- Yes, we love the flexibility of Fire HD 8 Kids Edition Tablets to help the boys stay busy on car rides, in waiting rooms, etc. One place we do not encourage screen time is at family gatherings. Generally, screens are left in the car or the diaper bag during get togethers, to encourage our kids to truly interact with family without distractions.
- Rules change seasonally.
- We tend to limit screen time less during the school year, and more during the summer. During the year, the boys are at school, actively learning and working hard all day. We see less of an issue with an hour or so of screen time in the afternoon, if they choose it then. We’re more careful during summer break to be sure we’re breaking screen time up more. No one needs to be immersed in a screen for days at a time!
Focus on Screen Time Quality
Let’s face it- there’s an ENORMOUS variety of screen time options out there for all ages. I’ll admit, I’m as guilty as anyone- some nights, I want to chill out with some mindless programs too. When it comes to my kids, it’s beneficial to focus on the quality of their screen time- and not always the quantity.
If my 8 year old is immersed in quality children’s literature on his Fire HD 8 Kids Edition Tablet, and spends a solid hour reading, I’m going to call it a win- and not a screen time failure. If the 3 year old logs a half hour ‘playing’ a game that is actually helping him review phonics skills, I’m thrilled. That’s one of the reasons we love our Fire Kids Edition tablets so much. The included 1 year subscription to Amazon FreeTime Unlimited gives kids access to quality content, including over 20,000 books, videos, Audible books, educational apps, games, and more. No more screen time guilt, because I know my boys are spending their time with engaging, quality options.
Control Screen Time Behind The Scenes
Sometimes, the simplest way to maintain peace is to remove the perception that mom and dad are making the choices. That’s one reason we love the Amazon FreeTime parental controls. My husband and I can set time limits, content filters, control web access, control in-app spending, and review the content our kids are accessing totally behind-the-scenes. I don’t know about your kids, but mine take time limits, etc. much better when they’re coming from someone other than mom or dad. Although they’re usually pretty good about it, this behind-the-scenes adult control definitely cuts down on power struggles- there’s no arguing back with the Fire Kids Edition when time is up!
Do you have rules or systems in place to control screen time for your family? I’d love to hear about them in the comments below!

5 Tips for An Unstoppable You This New Year
Welcome to 2019 my friends, and happy new year! In the weeks ahead, you’ll see that for my family, this year our resolutions will seem small. We’re focusing on small, simple changes we can make every day that will add up to a happier and healthier family- rather than attempting a major overhaul that we’ll inevitably fail. If this sounds like the approach you’re interested in, be sure to keep reading. Today, I’m sharing 5 simple tips to keep you feeling healthier, happier, and totally unstoppable this new year- and beyond.
Disclosure: This post is sponsored by BabbleBoxx.com on behalf of Healthy Choice.SIMPLE TIPS FOR AN UNSTOPPABLE NEW YEAR
Don’t Skip Your Morning Meal
I know, I know… We’ve been hearing it since grade school. ‘Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.’ And while that may not necessarily be true for everyone, my family and I generally do better if we start the day with something in our bellies. I am so NOT a morning person though, so it’s been a struggle to find something easy, healthy, and tasty that we can all enjoy. One item that definitely fits the bill is Healthy Choice’s new morning bowls.
These morning power bowls come in super yummy flavor combinations, like Pesto + Egg White Scramble or Roasted Red Pepper + Egg White Shakshuka. The ingredients are selected for their flavor as well as nutritional value, which makes grabbing one of these quick protein meals from the freezer a no-brainer. Each contains 10-15g of protein and 3-5g of fiber, so you’ll start your morning with a full belly and plenty of energy to keep you going.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
This is a task I really need to work on, and it truly is so important. Our bodies need to be hydrated to function at their best. (And no, I’m not talking about peak athletic performance here. I’m simply talking about making it through the day with the kids.) The simple truth is that sugary drinks and sodas full of empty calories aren’t going to help our bodies perform well. It’s totally worth the effort to grab yourself a water bottle you love, and make sure to keep it filled throughout the day. Trust me, you’ll notice the difference as the new year wears on.
Be Sure To Rest
An exhausted body simply can’t keep up. When you’re overworked or fatigued, you’re more likely to get sick, and your mood will likely suffer as well. Do yourself (and everyone around you) a favor and be sure to rest up. This doesn’t have to mean daily cat naps, or anything crazy. Head to bed at a reasonable hour each evening, and try to stick with a regular sleep schedule. (I’m a mom, I get it- I want that quiet time late at night too. It’s a balancing act, for sure.) Avoid phones, televisions, tablets, and other screens in the hour before bedtime, and try to avoid working in bed. Treat your need to rest with respect it deserves, and you may find yourself sleeping more soundly… And ultimately, waking up better prepared to face what the new year brings!
Keep The Veggies Coming
It’s a simple fact that we all know well- you’ve got to be eating your produce regularly to be sure you’re giving your body the healthy nutrients and fuel it needs. And as much as I try to meal plan and create balanced dinners that my family will love, there are nights when I just don’t want to stress. Nights like those (and some lunch times too!) I find myself reaching for Healthy Choice vegetarian or vegan power bowls.
These veggie bowls feature pre-made combinations of vegetables, legumes, and whole grains in flavorful combinations, so I’m sure to find something everyone in my family will love. Each bowl is filled with 10-16g of vegetarian-friendly protein, as well as 7-16g fiber, so we’re not tempted to snack immediately after eating. There are so many tasty options available, like White Bean + Feta Salad, Mango Edamame, and Falafel + Tahini, which means my kids and I get to try flavors that I’m not as likely to prepare on my own. And since every day is Earth Day around my house, we love that even the bowls themselves are plant-based and totally recyclable.
Get Moving
I know guys, it’s the middle of winter. It’s pretty cold and miserable most days here in upstate New York. The daylight hours are practically nonexistant, so getting up and getting moving can be tough. I promise though, it’s totally worth it for both your physical and mental health to find ways to incorporate movement and activity into your daily routine. I’m not going to preach about the gym or anything crazy. All I’m suggesting you start with is little things, like taking a walk with the kids, or helping them build a snowman in the yard. Small movements add up, and help your body stay in healthy shape. (Not to mention set a great example for the little eyes that are always watching!) Commit to getting moving in the new year, and you’ll likely find yourself more filled with energy when spring (eventually) arrives.

Have A Merry Christmas Peanut! Story Time with Sweet Treat
Realistic mom confession time, guys… Baking just isn’t my thing. For the past several weeks, my boys have been spending every Wednesday evening baking holiday treats with my mom. They know if Nana doesn’t take over, the cookies definitely won’t be baked! I tried not to let any mom guilt creep in, but I’m only human… So when a new favorite holiday picture book inspired a no-bake snack idea, I knew it was worth checking out. Read on to see the sweet treats that Merry Christmas, Peanut! inspired.
Disclosure: This post is not sponsored in any way.MERRY CHRISTMAS, PEANUT! STORY TIME AND TREAT
Reading Merry Christmas, Peanut!
My boys (including my hubs) are huge fans of Terry Border’s ‘Peanut’ picture book series. We first found Peanut Butter and Cupcake!, and have been hooked ever since. When I saw Merry Christmas, Peanut! in #thelittleone’s book order flyer, I knew it would be a great choice. My kids love the silly word play that runs through the book, and there are guaranteed giggles each time we read it out loud. I am personally amazed by the photographs Border created. I love the sort of ‘dollhouse feel’ of peanuts posed with miniatures and other tiny props. (Everything’s cuter when it’s tiny, right?!)
The book is the perfect choice for a holiday read aloud- your kids will undoubtedly be hoping that Peanut makes it to Grandma’s and everyone has a wonderful holiday celebration together. The adorable images, especially the gorgeous Christmas cookies lining the landscape put everyone in the mood for a sweet treat!
Creating Peanut Sweet Treats!
My boys love decorating holiday cookies, but I’m honestly not much of a baker. After reading Merry Christmas, Peanut! I was inspired to make these sweet cookies with them that are the best of both worlds. All the fun of holiday treat decorating, NONE of the baking! Win-win!
Supplies:
- Nutter Butter cookies.
- Assorted baking decorations.
- Sprinkles.
- Dragees.
- Jimmies.
- Etc.
- Assorted candies.
- Gum drops.
- Licorice strings.
- M&Ms.
- Etc.
- Tubes of frosting, icing, and/or candy decorating tubes.
- Your imagination!
Instructions:
- First, grab a Nutter Butter cookie.
- Next, use frosting, etc. to attach sweet goodies and extras to your cookie.
- Then get creative!
- The character options are unlimited. How you choose to use the decorations you’ve gathered is totally open. Enjoy your time creating a family of fun Peanut characters with your kiddos, and be sure to have them tell you about the choices they’re making while decorating!
- When you’re ready, grab a glass of milk and munch on your Peanut character cookies- if you can stand to eat your masterpiece!
- Finally, enjoy your snack, and have a Merry Christmas, Peanut!
What kind of holiday baking or treat decorating to you like to do with your kids? Tell me your go-to sweets in the comments below!

5 Fun Family Gift Boxes Inspired By Books This Christmas
While shopping for my nieces and nephews this Christmas, I decided to go in a much different direction than I did last year. Instead of giving smaller individual gifts to the kids, I’m trying out larger family gift boxes this year. For each of the families, I built their gift box around the theme of a popular book. I’m so excited for them to have the opportunity to check out a new book as a family, and then build on that story with some quality play time. Keep reading to see what our family gift boxes include this year.
[Spoiler alert for family members who may have decided to check out the blog today!]
BOOK INSPIRED FAMILY GIFT BOXES FOR CHRISTMAS
Build Me Up
I’ve shared before that both of my boys are just nuts about building. I knew they’d love the chance to check out the newest book from Sarah Dees– Genius LEGO® Inventions With Bricks You Already Have. #thebigone quickly became obsessed with the book- he loves taking inspiration from the photos and text, and thinking about ways he can tweak the already really cool designs featured in the book. My youngest is equally enamored with it, even though the builds are well above his skill level. The photos are bright and vivid, so they really draw even very young readers into the world of LEGO® creation. After we spent a bit of time with the book, I knew it was the perfect choice to put together a family gift box for my LEGO® loving 4 year old nephew and his 2 LEGO® fanatic parents as well!
I’ve also included:
- a classic LEGO® blocks set.
- some Mayka toy block tape.
- a mini-figure blind bag.
Other ideas to tuck inside:
- Brick-Mates Stack By Numbers kits.
- Tenka Labs’ Circuit Cubes sets.
- BrickStix sticker sets.
Other books you might consider:

Christmas Camp Out
My kiddos are huge fans of dramatic play together, so for family with another set of young brothers, I thought a pretend camp out would be a fun family gift box. I chose #thelittleone’s current favorite camping book as the inspiration for the box- Llama Llama Loves Camping. There are lots of other great camping themed picture books out there though, so be sure to grab what you think your family would prefer.
I’ve also included:
- a play tee-pee that includes a small flashlight.
- a set of camping themed dramatic play toys and props.
- We chose the Learning Resources New Sprouts Camp Out set, but there are several different options out there to choose from.

Family Forts
Seriously, is there anything more exciting than building a cool fort as a kid? The possibilities for dramatic play are endless when putting together family forts. For my 2 nephews and their younger sister, I put together this family fort kit, inspired by Fort-Building Time.
I’ve also included:

PJ’s All Day
We borrowed Pancakes in Pajamas from our local library last month. Both of my kiddos loved the story of the Bear family’s Saturday. Since my youngest niece isn’t ready for fort building just yet, I thought the book would be the perfect inspiration for a family meal she can share with her parents.
I’ve also included:
- a new pair of pajamas.
- a package of pancake mix.
- a bottle of maple syrup.
- some age appropriate ‘breakfast themed’ toys.
Other ideas to tuck inside:

All That Glitters
As a mom of all boys, there’s a small part of me that loves the chance to shop for little girls. My husband put me in charge of gift shopping for his goddaughter and her little sister, and I loved it. I knew their parents were interested in new books for the girls, and that the little ones love princesses and crafts. When I saw Just Add Glitter at the bookstore, I knew it was perfect for them. (And secretly, I really kinda wanted to get a second copy for my house. But I resisted the urge). Angela DiTerlizzi wrote the sweetest tale of a young girl and her cat who know that a little sparkle improves everything. Samantha Cotterill’s incredibly creative illustrations mix drawings with photography in an engaging way.
I’ve also included:
- a Klutz Jr. ‘My Twinkly Tiaras’ craft kit.
- a small set of glitter markers for each girl.
- a box of sparkly crayons for each girl.
- a roll of shimmery washi tape.
- I tucked the smaller craft supplies into a super sparkly pouch for each girl.
Other ideas to tuck inside:
- Glitter glue.
- Glitter slime.
- Packages of loose glitter. (If you think the parents are exceptionally brave/tolerant of sparkle!)
Other books you might consider:
- Glitter by Stella J. Jones and Judi Abbot
- A Unicorn Named Sparkle by Amy Young

How To Prepare At Home For A Family Holiday Road Trip
The holidays can be such a stressful time for so many. In addition to disrupted schedules, financial strain, and pressure for cheer, you likely also need to navigate some sort of travel plans. We’re lucky that our family isl within a 2-3 hour drive for us, so our travels are fairly easy. However, any parent with young kids knows that a family holiday road trip can be tricky, no matter the distance. Today, I’m sharing my plan-ahead essentials that make hitting the road with the kids each December a bit easier.
This post was sponsored by Amazon as part of an Ambassador Activation for Influence Central and all opinions expressed in my post are my own.
PREPARING FOR A FAMILY HOLIDAY ROAD TRIP
Keep It Comfortable
No matter how cute or picture-worthy a holiday outfit might look, I know my kids behave better in the car when they’re comfortable. Road trips generally mean they wear jammies or soft clothes. I’m careful to pack their nicer clothes in an easily accessible space, so I can get them changed shortly after arriving. It’s also a great idea to keep comfort items like blankets, travel pillows, etc, somewhere that kids can grab them. More comfortable passengers are less likely to whine, so planning ahead in this area pays off!
Plan For Entertainment
There was a time when I would stock a basket for each boy with books, a portable DVD player, hand held games, etc. In all honesty, all that ‘stuff’ just made the car messy. It also meant I spent a lot of time craning into the back seat, helping one of them hunt something down. We’ve been lucky that Amazon’s best selling kids tablet, the Fire HD 8 Kids Edition Tablet has totally changed things around for us. It’s the perfect tech-y tool to give my kids streamlined access to their favorite videos, movies, books, games, apps, Audible books, and more.
A few days before each road trip, I spend some time preparing their tablets for the journey, by adding new media they can easily check out in ‘offline mode’ while we’re on the road. Because my family has control over what media is available to the boys through the Amazon FreeTime parental controls and Parent Dashboard, I can make sure the focus is on learning through play, and engaging educational content. After making sure their Fire HD 8 Kids Edition Tablets are stocked with fun media, and fully charged, I know the boys will be happily entertained for the entire ride. (And with a battery life of up to 10 hours, I don’t need to worry about recharging mid-trip!)
Snack Happy
Both of my boys take after me in their tendency to entirely bypass hungry, and head straight for hangry. There’s little as frustrating as being stuck in the middle of a holiday road trip with the family and hearing the unending whines of ‘I’m hungry…. No, I don’t want to eat that!’ A few days before heading out, I pack a small plastic tub with some kid-friendly, and easy to eat holiday road trip snacks. Applesauce pouches, pretzels, crackers, etc. are pretty safe bets. My kiddos love those snacks, and they won’t make a huge mess. The morning of our getaway, I tuck a few travel bottles or sippy cups of water in the tub as well. Full bellies mean quiet boys, which ultimately means less stress for mom and dad, AND fewer stops along the way.
Staying Safe
We live in upstate New York, where weather can be especially unpredictable in the winter months. On family holiday road trips, we make sure the car is stocked with safety essentials- just in case. In case of sudden storms or an unexpected break down, we pack winter gear like boots. I keep a few spare blankets in the trunk, so we can warm up if needed. Emergency supplies like a first aid kit, jumper cables, and a snow shovel are also must-haves. It takes up a bit more trunk space, but I believe it’s worth it, should an accident happen.
Does your family typically take a holiday road trip? How do you plan ahead to make it successful? I’d love to hear your suggestions in the comments below!
