Simple Evening Steps For Easier Back To School Mornings

Our family has been settling into our back to school morning routine for the last few weeks. The first few days are always the roughest for us. Through some trial and error over the past few years, I’ve found some great ways to spend some time each evening preparing to make our mornings run smoother. Today, I’m sharing the three prep ideas that have had the greatest impact on our morning routines. Read on to see how we make it work, and be sure to check out the super yummy breakfast I love throwing together for my boys.

Thank you to TruMoo for sponsoring this post. As always, all thoughts within this post are my own.
Adjusting to a new year’s back to school routine can be challenging! I’m sharing a few of the #TriedAndTruMoo ways I’ve found to prepare for a busy morning the night before. #ad #BackToSchool #TruMoo #BackToSchoolHacks #MomHacks #newschoolyear

EVENING PREP IDEAS FOR EASIER BACK TO SCHOOL MORNINGS

    Make Wardrobe Decisions

Since #thebigone was very young, I’ve helped him set up his wardrobe each week. When he was very young and his clothes were tiny, we used 5 shoe box size plastic containers. He and I would add a pair of socks, some underwear, pants, and a shirt to each box. Each morning before preschool, #thebigone could grab a box and get started dressing himself. Now that he’s older, his clothes don’t fit well into those little boxes, so we’ve handed them down to #thelittleone. I now use a hanging organizer in #thebigone’s closet, where I add a complete outfit in each storage space. This really cuts down on confusion and craziness during those back to school mornings when you’re still getting into a routine.

    Pack Your Bags

I always fall asleep a little easier when I know the bags are packed for the next morning. #thebigone and I review what he needs to have in his bag. I take care of #thelittleone’s daycare backpack. We leave them both on a rack in the front entry of our house, with the boys’ shoes and jackets. If I have a class or work event I need to attend one morning, I’ll be careful to pack my bags the night before as well. Every night before he heads to bed, my husband packs up his laptop bag and places it directly in front of our front door. My family may be rushing around trying to get our back to school act together, but at least we know we can grab our bags and have what we need.

    Put Together a Filling Breakfast

Full disclosure, guys- I am so not a morning person. Or a great cook… So breakfast at my house can be a little iffy somedays! Throw trying to adjust to a new back to school routine into the mix, and we definitely rely on toast more than we should! The last thing I want is to send my kids off for the day with empty bellies. No one’s day goes well when they start it hungry! Luckily, it’s been a lifesaver to discover overnight oats recently. I can prepare several containers of oatmeal for my family in the evening, and we wake up to a tasty breakfast!

Evening Prep For Easier Mornings- TruMoo Overnight Oats

My family’s favorite variety of overnights is definitely the Very Berry Overnight Oats I put together using TruMoo Strawberry Milk. It’s made from milk that is free from artificial growth hormones, and made with non-GMO ingredients. TruMoo Strawberry Milk is a great source of calcium as well, so I know my boys are getting what their bodies need. My picky kiddos love the flavor, so I’m able to avoid mealtime battles. No one has time for that sort of nonsense during the busy back to school season!

    FALL LEAF STORY TIME

    Reading The Little Yellow Leaf

The Little Yellow Leaf Fall Leaf Story Time Book

The Little Yellow Leaf by Carin Berger is perfect for an autumn story time. The book tells the tale of a little yellow leaf who just isn’t ready to fall yet. That little fall leaf hangs on well into the cool weather. Eventually, Little Yellow Leaf finds that he’s ready to drop when a friend joins him. The illustrations in the book are sophisticated and interesting. Printed text scattered through out the images adds texture. Little Yellow Leaf, Little Scarlet Leaf, and the other leaves are pictured in gentle ombres of fall colors. Like the illustrations, the narrative of the story is elegant and simple. The beautiful story is an ideal choice to get kids thinking creatively about fall leaf art.

In The Middle of Fall Sensory & Snack Story Time

With autumn quickly creeping in, the boys and I have been having fun reading fall stories together. I’ve been trying to give #thelittleone some extra sensory input lately, since we’re noticing a lot of issues with things like bath, settling down at bedtime, etc. My husband and I hoped that some more active sensory learning would tire him out as well as help him learn to soothe himself a bit better. When I picked up In The Middle Of Fall during a bookstore run lately, I knew it was the perfect choice to inspire a fall sensory and snack story time. Read on to see what activities I paired with it, and the great new table that makes our sensory & snack story times so successful.

Fall is in the air, making it the perfect time to set up a fall sensory & snack story time for young learners! Check out my fun ideas inspired by Kevin Henkes' "In The Middle Of Fall", as well as the really cool sensory table we've been using lately. Reading In the Middle of Fall

In The Middle Of Fall Story Time In The Middle Of Fall Story Time

I hit up the bookstore recently, and In The Middle of Fall called to me from a central display. The high contrast blue and orange cover caught my eye immediately. When I saw it was written by Kevin Henkes (a long time favorite at this house!) I knew it was a done deal. In The Middle of Fall did not disappoint. Henkes’ text is simple and sparse, but filled with beautiful moments like ‘…the apples are like ornaments.’ Laura Dronzek’s illustrations fill the book with bright, painterly illustrations. The images easily evoke the feeling of movement as the leaves fall and the wind blows. It’s easy for children to be drawn into the autumn world within the book. After reading In The Middle of Fall, I knew it was the perfect choice to inspire a fall story time.

STORY INSPIRED Fall Sensory & Snack

    Fall Sensory

    Materials:

    • Fall leaves.
      • Real or artificial leaves work equally well. I grabbed our artificial leaves at our local dollar store because our real leaves are still clinging to the trees right now.
    • Acorns.
      • Again, real or artificial acorns will both work. Our yard is covered in acorns, so we used a mixture of real and artificial ones. The artificial ones are plastic vase fillers I picked up from a craft store.
    • Small bucket(s). (Optional)
      • Bowls or baskets would be fine as well. When your little ones gather acorns like the squirrels do, they may need some place to sort them! Plus ‘fill and spill’ onto the tabletop always makes sensory play extra fun!
    • Sensory bin or table.

In The Middle Of Fall Sensory Story Time
In The Middle Of Fall Sensory Story Time

I drew inspiration for the sensory activity directly from the end papers within In The Middle of Fall. The activity comes together very quickly when the materials are assembled. #thelittleone loves getting into sensory bins, and this one definitely kept him happily occupied for quite a while. Big brother didn’t want to be left out either – as you can see!

In The Middle Of Fall Sensory Story Time In The Middle Of Fall Sensory Story Time In The Middle Of Fall Sensory Story Time

Fill your sensory bin or table with a mixture of fall leaves and acorns. Mix things up a bit so that some of the acorns are buried. Encourage your child to dig through the leaves hunting for acorns like a squirrel does in the fall. You can add some additional learning in by counting acorns as they pull them out, organizing the acorns by size, or sorting them by color. If you’re using plastic colored acorns, talk about which ones are easier to find, and which are more camouflaged. The boys both had a great time on their fall sensory acorn hunt!

    Fall Snack

I created a special, hands on snack time treat to accompany our fall story time read aloud. Our Simplay 3 In & Out Activity Table was perfect for setting up this project. I was able to store the acorns and leaves right in the bins, and flip the lid to the table over. After quickly wiping it down, it was time to start creating a yummy treat!

In The Middle Of Fall Snack Story Time

    Supplies:

    • Simple sugar or shortbread cookies.
      • Mine were not homemade, ’cause I know my limits!
    • Food coloring in autumn shades. (Red, yellow, orange, green, etc.)
    • Water.
    • Clean eye droppers/medicine droppers and/or pastry brushes.
    • Small bowls.
    • Plenty of paper towels or a cookie sheet/tray- for messy little ones to work on top of!

In The Middle Of Fall Snack Story Time In The Middle Of Fall Snack Story Time In The Middle Of Fall Snack Story Time In The Middle Of Fall Snack Story Time

First I watered the food coloring down quite a bit, so it wouldn’t be too intense. I set some cookies on the tray and helped #thelittleone start decorating. After a little bit of guidance, he was able to work on it fairly independently. Kids can simply drop or paint the dilluted food coloring onto the cookies. The dye will bleed into the other colors creating a multi-colored autumn leaf look. Because there is no right or wrong outcome for the cookies, every child will be successful in decorating their snack! (Just be sure not to let kiddos go overboard with the water. A damp cookie is one thing, and will dry fairly quickly. A soggy cookie that has turned into dyed mush is a whole other story!)

    IN & OUT ACTIVITY TABLE

I promised earlier to fill you guys in on the great table we used during this fall sensory story time. We’ve been breaking in our new Simplay 3 In & Out Activity Table for the past few weeks, and so far we LOVE it! We don’t have a large home, so I really needed to find a solution for sensory bins that would work in tight spaces. I also wanted to put a small table in the kitchen for #thelittleone to stand and work at while I was cooking. The In & Out Activity Table is the perfect solution since it does double duty as a sensory table and regular table.

In The Middle Of Fall Snack Story Time

The table is lightweight, making it easy to reconfigure. I can fill the bins with whatever sensory fun we’re getting into each week, and store the filled bins right under the table top. That keeps #thelittleone from getting into things he shouldn’t be, while making it easy to pull the activities out again when it’s convenient.  It’s also super convenient to move in and out of the house – we love to get outside and take advantage of good weather as often as we can! We can switch from sensory to snack in no time, with just a little bit of rearranging the tables, and wiping the top down quickly. The Simplay 3 In & Out Activity Table could not be more convenient for our sensory play needs!

Fall is in the air, making it the perfect time to set up a fall sensory & snack story time for young learners! For the past year or so, #thelittleone has been a huge fan of the Bear series. I’m sure the majority of the parents out there are familiar with Karma Wilson and Jane Chapman’s series of picture books about lovable Bear and his animal friends. Over the last several months, #thelittleone has also become a huge fan of sorting and classifying. He loves to sort things by shape, color, or size, and does it over and over. When we picked up a set of counting bears recently, I knew they would pair perfectly with some of our Bear books in learning activities my kiddo would love. Read on to see what stories we’ve been using them with. Be sure to scroll all the way to the bottom of the post as well for a round up of other great ways to use counting bears for learning!

    STORY TIME WITH BEAR

    Bear Counts

We love this sweet little counting book for early math. Bear Counts is a sturdy board book, perfect for my youngest monster’s rough hands. It feature simple rhyming verses that identify things Bear and his friends encounter in the forest. As the book progresses, Bear ultimately counts up to five. In addition to the basic math presented, there’s a lot of opportunity to enrich vocabulary as young readers point out animals, fruits, etc.

    Bear Sees Colors

This book in the series is a bit longer than Bear Counts, but very similar in style. Bear and his forest friends take a stroll, identifying the colors around them as they go. The rhymes are lyrical, and allow young readers to ‘predict’ what color will be featured on the next page. The bright illustrations offer plenty of opportunity for look-and-find while pointing out other things in the same shade on each page.

USING COUNTING BEARS AT STORY TIME

    Counting

We’re still very early in the counting process with #thelittleone, so it will be a bit before he can complete this activity independently. I know it’s going to be one he loves in the future though. We paired our counting bears with a muffin tin, as well as the number printable I created. (Grab yours at the end of this post!) Cut out the circles and place them randomly in the bottom of the muffin tin. Encourage your child to count while adding counting bears to each cup of the tin until they reach the correct number. Use a 6-cup muffin tin for younger kids, and a 12-cup tin for an extra challenge for older children. The colors of the numbers can correspond to the colors of the bears as well, if you want to work on two skills at once.

    Colors

#thelittleone has become very strong with his color sorting, which is a fun skill to watch develop. I paired our counting bears with a muffin tin and Bear color printable (see below to get yours). Use scissors to cut out each Bear circle, and place randomly in the bottom of a muffin tin. Encourage your child to sort the counting bears by color into the appropriate cups of the tin. Use a 6-cup muffin tin for younger children, and a 12-cup tin for an extra challenge for older kids. Reinforce the colors from the story by talking about what Bear saw in each color as your child sorts their counting bears. Do they remember what Bear saw that was red? Purple? And so on.

How We’re Raising Future Caregivers With Help From Sam’s Club

As my grandparents age and require more help, we're taking the opportunity to find ways to raise future caregivers. Find out how we're working towards that goal, and how Sam's Club is helping us maintain our sanity through out the process! #ad #FamilyCaregiving #motherhood #raisinggoodkids #caregivers #momsohard #parentinggoals

There are many goals I have in mind when I am raising my children… I aim to raise boys who are happy, healthy, loving, patient, and tolerant. In line with those hopes is my dream to raise part of the next generation of caregivers. There are a few steps my family and I are actively taking in an effort to raise boys who are truly their for the family that needs them. I’m sharing a few of those ideas today, because I know there must be other parents out there wondering how to do the same in their families. Read on to see how we’re bringing up some future family caregivers, and how you can work on instilling those values in your children too.

    Raising Future Caregivers- Leading

RAISING THE NEXT GENERATION OF CAREGIVERS

    Read To Remove Fear

Raising Future Caregivers- Reading Raising Future Caregivers- Reading

Kids’ minds are constantly turning, and my boys are no exception. In our family, we almost always turn to children’s books when we need to discuss a serious topic. My grandmother’s health is no exception. Due to her dementia, her behavior can be unpredictable and erratic at times. Sometimes we see her or other memory care residents yelling, or acting in ways that can be confusing and frightening for kids. By reading – and then re-reading – books that help to explain the changes they are experiencing, we can minimize some of our kid’s fears. Reading together gives them an opportunity to ask questions about what they may have seen during a particular visit. They can also talk about worries they have for the future in regards to health or aging.

Raising Future Caregivers- Reading Raising Future Caregivers- Reading

The more you read through the books together, the more comfortable your kids will be with what they’re seeing. Identifying concerns and talking through them regularly helps kids feel more secure and understood. In turn, they’ll be better prepare to take on roles as caregivers in the future.

Raising Future Caregivers- Reading Raising Future Caregivers- Reading

    Our top choices:

    • What’s Happening To Grandpa? by Maria Shriver, illustrated by Sandra Speidel
    • Now One Foot, Now The Other, stories and pictures by Tomie de Paola
    • Little Mama Forgets, by Robin Cruise, pictures by Stacey Dressen-McQueen

    Meet Kids Halfway

For my sons, visits to the memory care unit where my grandmother lives can cause a little anxiety at times. The residents typically flock to young children, so my kiddos are very popular when they visit. It can be a little overwhelming to have so many people they don’t really know asking questions, or asking for hugs or kisses. So we allow the boys to set limits when they need to. They can politely tell the residents ‘no thank you’ to hugs (although we’ve discussed many times that many don’t realize they’re being overbearing when asking).

    Raising Future Caregivers- Leading

My oldest especially finds it overwhelming sometimes, so I encourage him to pack a book or something small to keep him occupied. When he needs a breather, he can sit quietly and build Legos. My grandmother is typically happy just to have children around her, without needing much conversation or chatter.

    Lead By example

Let your kids frequently see yourself and your spouse acting as caregivers. Children are always watching, and learning from your actions. Seeing you as caregivers will set them up to naturally move into those roles as they get older. As a child, my mother had my girl scout troop ‘adopt’ a grandmother at a local nursing home each year. We would visit the residents around the holidays, and spend time helping in little ways. My parents always involved my sister and I when they were caregivers for my great grandmother.

Raising Future Caregivers- Leading Raising Future Caregivers- Leading

When my grandfather was in a rehabilitation facility, we would bring #thelittleone to visit. He loved to sit on Pop-Pop’s lap and chatter at him while we encouraged my grandfather to do his physical therapy or practice using his new walker. My boys see my parents and myself take my grandmother out for dinner several times a month. They see us helping her to her room, or in and out of cars. They watch as we gently try to reassure her in a moment of confusion or anger. All of these moments are teaching through example how many caregivers act, and what may be expected of them in the future.

    Raising Future Caregivers- Leading

    Share Your Memories

My children have never known my grandmother in the way that I did. For as long as they have known her, she has been living with dementia. I love sharing photos with them from my childhood, when my grandmother was still vibrant and independent. It’s fun for them to see how she looked (that dyed bright red hair!) and hear about her personality quirks. More than just being fun though, it subtly establishes the idea that time will change people.

    Raising Future Caregivers- Remembering

The truth is that people who are healthy when they’re young may not always stay that way as they age. By sharing our family history, I am indirectly introducing my sons to the idea that many of our loved ones may need caregivers in the future. Giving them exposure to that idea early, in a non-threatening way allows them to be more patient with the changes we see in my grandmother, as well as have realistic expectations for the future.

    Raising Future Caregivers- Remembering

Make It Easy Where You Can

No one says that raising a growing family and acting as caregivers to an older family member will be easy. I speak from experience when I say that it can be complicated and overwhelming. Whenever possible, I suggest knowing and setting your own limits. It’s crucial for your own mental health, as well as your children’s happiness. That’s why I love how Sam’s Club’s Caregivers Program is making my family’s role so much easier than it used to be.

Raising Future Caregivers- Shopping at Sam's Club- Scan & Go

My parents or I can pick up my grandmother’s necessities on a regular Sam’s Club run, rather than having to run to a special medical supply store. They even have the option to order online and pick it up right at the store – no more trying to wrangle kids and a cart while I shop! Alternatively, we can also order exactly what she needs online to have it delivered in discreet packaging – because I’m not entirely in the mood to have the mail carrier assume I’m in adult diapers quite yet! Plus, buying the essentials wholesale saves money, which is ideal for my grandmother’s fixed income!

Raising Future Caregivers- Shopping at Sam's Club- Poise Raising Future Caregivers- Shopping at Sam's Club- Depend

As my grandmother’s condition continues to change, and her Alzheimer’s Disease progresses, I’m grateful for the wide variety of products Sam’s Club has available for caregivers. Her toileting is becoming less and less independent as time progresses. As a result, the option to easily change our purchases from Poise liners and pads to Depend products is ideal. My grandmother’s diet is becoming increasingly finicky and less nutritionally sound, so we’ll be adding Ensure Nutrition Shakes to our orders in the near future as well.

3 Quick Tips To Make After School Errands With Kids Easier

This post was sponsored by Nabisco as part of an Integrated Activation for Influence Central and all opinions expressed in my post are my own.

After school errands can be a nightmare with my boys some afternoons. I'm sharing a few of my 'must-haves' to make them easier- including a tasty snack you'll often find in my glove box! Plus, there's a great giveaway happening for a limited time, so be sure to grab your chance! #ad #afterschool #errands #momlife #teddysoftbakes #momtips

Am I the only mom who feels like the afternoons between school and dinner time are just absolutely insane?! I feel like as soon as #thebigone hops off the bus after school, we’ve got to ‘go go go’ straight through the next few hours. There’s scouting, sports, playdates, picking up #thelittleone from daycare… It seems to be never ending! #thebigone typically gets very annoyed when he’s being dragged around town. Thanks to some recent changes I’ve made, after school errands have started to get a bit easier. I’ve put together a list of the 3 quick, simple tips that have helped to make my boys more agreeable on the go. The after school run-around is exhausting enough-no one wants whining kids on top of it all! Read on for those tips, and to see the tasty snack you can almost always find in our glove compartment!

    KEEP A KID’S CALENDAR

I feel lost without my planner, so I can just imagine how #thebigone feels when he’s not sure of the plan for the day. This school year, we decided to get him his own calendar. We can help him fill it out with events like library day, Boy Scout meetings, or time with his dad. He crosses off each day as it passes, so he can keep track of where he is in the month. With time, I’ll be able to do less cuing and reminding about what’s coming up. Instead I can simply encourage him to check his calendar. The calendar helps give him some independence in terms of preparing what he needs for each activity. If soccer is coming up on Saturday morning, #thebigone knows to gather his cleats and shin guards Friday evening.

    PACK ENTERTAINMENT

I find that the ‘boring’ chores that have to get done go smoother when the kids have entertainment with them. We keep a small selection of early chapter books in the car so that #thebigone can grab one to read on a trip across town. If I know we’ll be out and about for a long time, I may consider bringing his tablet with us, although we don’t rely heavily on screen time. In addition to books, I usually also have a small notebook, pens, and some crayons or colored pencils in a bag. #thebigone loves to play hangman or tic tac toe while he waits places, so it’s a great way to keep him engaged and happy. Activity books and puzzle books are also great to have when you’re out and about.

    DON’T FORGET THE SNACKS

After School Errands- Bear Snacks After School Errands- Bear Snacks

Let’s face it. No one is terribly pleasant when they’re feeling ‘hangry’, kids or adults. #thebigone is no exception. I try to keep a few packs of non-perishable snacks either in my bag or the glove compartment of the car. They’re easy to grab, and simple to serve. One of the most requested snacks from my kiddos is TEDDY SOFT BAKED Filled Snacks. I try to always keep at least a few in the car for them. TEDDY SOFT BAKED Filled Snacks come in both vanilla and chocolate, which is perfect because my boys like having a bit of variety in their snacks. The TEDDY SOFT BAKED Filled Snacks are made with real ingredients, like eggs and milk. They’re free of artificial flavors or colors, so I don’t have to worry about my kids eating them. They’re available at Wal-Mart in the cookie and cracker aisle. That makes it super convenient to pick more up for a reasonable price any time we need them. Best of all, TEDDY SOFT BAKED Filled Snacks taste great so I know my kiddos will snack happily. (And my boys can be pretty darn picky!)

5 Ideas For Early Learning With Puppets

In our home, we really value toys that inspire and encourage learning. Learning through play is the ideal way for kids’ minds to develop, so we try to focus on toys that help do that. One of our favorite toys to use in this way is hand puppets. There are so many great options for learning with puppets. Today, I want to highlight 5 of our favorites. I’m also sharing a peek at one of our favorite hand puppets, as well as a special discount to purchase your own, so be sure to keep reading!

This post has been sponsored by IHelpMoms.com and Cate & Levi. All opinions expressed are my own.Have you started using puppets for early learning at home? I'm sharing 5 great ways that learning with puppets makes it fun! Check out my tips, as well as the adorable Cate + Levi puppet we've been loving! #ad #earlylearning #earlyliteracy #preschool #preschoolathome #homeschool #cateandlevi #ihelpmoms

5 IDEAS FOR LEARNING WITH PUPPETS

Reading & Literacy Learning With Puppets

As much as my kids love story time, some days I can tell they’re bored with the ‘same old, same old.’ Introducing puppets is a great option to spice up story time a bit. If you’re reading a well loved book that your children can read (or recite from memory!), they can use a puppet to speak their parts. If it’s a newer book or your kids are just feeling a bit chill, the adult can use the puppets for the read aloud- bonus points for voices! Puppets are a great way to check your child’s comprehension and retention. When a child’s puppet can ‘play’ back what was just read, you know they’ve got it!

Early Learning With Puppets- Reading Early Learning With Puppets- Reading Early Learning With Puppets- Reading

Alternatively, older kids may enjoy using the puppets to facilitate their daily sight word review or independent reading. Sometimes you need to switch up the study routine a bit. A cute puppet brings a new, lively dimension to daily reading tasks that might otherwise be boring.

    Puppet Spelling Bee

One way we love to pep up our sight word review at home is with spelling bees. #thebigone challenges myself or my husband to a spelling bee after dinner, when it’s time for the daily spelling list review. A sense of competition also ignites his resolve to really spell the words correctly. That’s always a good thing in my book. (Anything to help motivate independent learners!)

    Early Learning With Puppets- Imaginative

Puppets can add a new twist to the evening spelling bee. They can recite their words in the puppet’s voice and character, taking a bit of pressure off the child to always get it right. Challenging kids to spell words in certain accents or voices with the puppets can also help keep monotonous tasks like spelling review fresh and lively.

    Puppets For Speech Learning

#thebigone spent several years working with speech therapists. He had a history of conductive hearing loss in one ear as a toddler, which impacted his articulation. Later, he developed a severe stutter, so we worked with a fluency specialist to help him learn to smooth things out a bit. Today, people are shocked when they see videos of him at his most severe. Most people tell us they would never have guessed he ever had any speech issues.

    Early Learning With Puppets- Imaginative

We spent a lot of time modelling speech that was slow and stretchy. Puppets were a fun way to help him engage in fluent speech. I could use a puppet to speak in a smooth, fluent fashion, and he could use another to do the same in response. When working on something like speech with kids, it’s crucial that it not feel like work. You want even basic fluency practice to feel like play. Introducing puppets to our speech practice helped keep it light and fun for #thebigone.

    Puppets For emotional Learning

I always find that with my kids, directly asking about an emotionally significant even often leads to them clamming up. No one likes being put on the spot about the heavy stuff, even young children. Facilitating conversation with puppets gives my boys the sense of security they need to talk with me about what they’re feeling. We also choose to use puppets to model appropriate responses to emotionally charged situations. When you’re not in the midst of a volatile situation, and focused on play, puppets can help teach emotional awareness. A puppet can playfully model calming techniques like deep breathing or counting and hopefully help head off future tantrums. A dramatic reaction from a ‘sore loser’ puppet might help your sore loser learn to work through their disappointment in a kinder way. Talking about emotions and feelings is an ideal time for learning with puppets.

Imaginative Play For Learning With Puppets

Finally, you certainly can’t forget to include the most important work of children on this list. Puppets are at their root, fun toys for creative and imaginative play. Kids will learn just as much from free play time with puppets as they will from the ideas listed above. Set up a puppet theater area in your home and give them some time to explore new ideas with their puppets. Older kids can put together a puppet show for family, which will engage them in cooperative working and problem solving. Younger kids can enjoy the imaginative, open ended nature of play with puppets. These plush toys give them the opportunity to explore worlds outside of their own, which is invaluable for raising lifelong learners.

    LOVING THE PUPPET WE USE?

Have you been eyeing the adorable puppet featured through out this post? That cute fellow is the wool monkey puppet from Cate and Levi. Their puppets are made in Canada from upcycled reclaimed materials. (Love ‘green’ toys!) Our monkey is so soft and cuddly, and my boys can’t stop bickering over who gets him next! Luckily, their puppets are well made and sturdy, so he can withstand a little tug-of-war over whose turn it is to use the puppet. Cate and Levi have a whole line of award winning puppet designs to choose from (and some other really cute stuff too!). There’s sure to be a few that would be perfect for helping your family learn too!

5 Screen Time Choices My Family Is Making

No doubt, you’ve seen the ever-changing studies and ‘rules’ about screen time for kids all over the internet. I don’t know about you, but I can barely keep up with the fluctuating research and findings! So we’ve decided to make our screen time choices as a family based on what we know about our kiddos, and what works for our family. We value the importance of active thinking and play for our boys, so it’s important to us that screen time not be a 24/7 thing here. However, we also believe ‘everything in moderation is key.’ Inspired by the ‘Genius Of Play’ campaign, I’m talking about how we make it work in our home. Read on to see the 5 choices my family is making about screen time. If you’ve been questioning the screen time standards in your home, these choices may be a great starting point for your to re-evaluate your family’s stance.

Screen time is a hotly debated issue facing parents today. Check out the 5 choices my family is making to find ways to make screen time work for us. #ad #screentime #parenting #familylife #parentingchoices
This post is sponsored by “The Genius of Play” Initiative. All opinions expressed are my own.

Choose toys inspired by screen time favorites.

We’ve had a lot of success choosing toys for #thebigone that are inspired by his screen time favorites, but don’t necessarily involve a screen. Choosing open ended toys allows kids to be creative and imaginative while still feeling connected to their favorite games or videos. Minecraft lends itself perfectly to building, so encouraging building with Legos is an ideal extension. Roblox figures promote dramatic play, as kids help their characters act out scenes. Plush toys allow children to cuddle with a favorite game character at bedtime. It’s the perfect option to help kids settle down at bedtime, rather than a screen making sleep more difficult.

5 Screen Time Choices- Screen Time Toys

Choose books inspired by screen time favorites.

This is another area where we’ve chosen to find screen time extensions that don’t actually involve screens. When at the bookstore, we notice our oldest steering towards books that coordinate with his favorite video games. If it means he enthusiastically reads independently, we’re happy to fill our shelves with Minecraft inspired series. #thebigone feels like he’s still immersed in the world of his game, when he’s really getting some quality quiet time and reading practice.

5 Screen Time Choices- Screen Time Books

Another great book alternative we love is purchasing workbooks inspired by our children’s on-screen favorites. #thebigone has always loved workbooks, so for him, this option is more play than work. (We would never force extra work on a kid who didn’t enjoy it! Play is the work of childhood, after all.) His favorite workbooks for years have been inspired by Star Wars. The characters make learning math and phonics seem like playtime to him. We loved being able to help him learn without needing a screen.

5 Screen Time Choices- Screen Time Workbooks

    Choose quality screen time.

We’re not crazy. My husband and I know that our kids are going to spend time in front of screens. Honestly, they’re probably exposed to screens more than they should be. Whenever possible, we make an effort to help our kids engage in quality screen time. There’s a huge difference between #thebigone sitting zoned out on the couch watching tv mindlessly and coding on our raspberry pi with my husband. He loves video games, so rather than just sitting and playing, we chose a kit to help him create his own video game. Sure, it involves a screen, but he goes through the creative process along with it, and the possibilities are endless. We don’t want to deprive our kids of all screen time by any means. Instead we want to focus on engaging, active, creative screen time options. This choice is truly where the old cliche ‘it’s not quantity, it’s quality’ comes into play. Ideally, the majority of screen time in our home should inspire creative, active thinking, and PLAY!

5 Screen Time Choices- Quality Screen Time 5 Screen Time Choices- Quality Screen Time

    Choose to research.

I’m just an average mom, by no means an expert at any of this! Sure, I can share the choices my family makes regarding screen time, but it’s not gospel. Make sure to do what works for your family, and do your research. There are countless books out there on the topic of screen time for kids. Check some out from your local library, or grab one the next time you’re at the bookstore. Consult a few before you find the guidance that resonates for you, and really suits your family.

5 Screen Time Choices- Screen Time Research

    choose to be flexible.

Truly, this is probably the most important choice we’ve made. I’ve learned that there are times when it’s crucial to be flexible. Some days as a parent, you need to bend the rules a bit. Super rainy stretch of weather? Of course we’ll watch a little extra screen time. Fun new movie out at the theater? You can bet we’ll head out to see it. [Bonus points if it’s inspired by a book though, so we can read the book first and compare!] Family movie nights, days spent with Nana & Grandpa, blizzards, mornings when #thelittleone has woken up super early and we just can’t adult yet… They all call for a little extra screen time. Everything in moderation. Extend yourself a bit of grace in these moments.

The Big Adventures of Tiny House Story Time

Guys, I’ve gotta confess. I’m super fascinated by tiny homes, although I know I’m way too much of a ‘stuff’ person to ever live in one. You must have seen the videos and photos going viral on Facebook. The cuteness of the homes, the minimalism, the flexibility- they all appeal to so many! (Be honest- isn’t everything just a little cuter when it’s in miniature?!) I was so excited to get the opportunity to check out The Big Adventures of Tiny House. After all, if a tiny house isn’t in my actual future, a tiny house story time is the next best thing!

Susan Schaefer Bernardo wrote The Big Adventures of Tiny House, while Courtenay Fletcher illustrated the book. The story tells the tale of a little house that found new life being rebuilt as a tiny house. Tiny goes off on adventures through out the country, meeting a cast of other on-the-move homes on his journey. Ultimately, Tiny settles in an adorable, idyllic looking community, ready to travel whenever the urge strikes again.

The story is conveyed in sweet rhymes, which are always favorites in my house. I may be the only one drawing this comparison, but The Big Adventures of Tiny House kind of seemed like a modern nod to Virginia Lee Burton’s classic The Little House. We loved the illustrations in The Big Adventures of Tiny House- Tiny, Shiny, and the other characters all have sweet faces. More importantly, diversity is well represented in the few instances that humans are depicted. And bonus, there’s even a cute Little Free Library tucked into one of the images- such a fun find for young readers!

    create Your Own Tiny House

It’s a pretty classic play activity for kids, and remains a perennial favorite because it’s just that fun! Grab a big box cardboard box and some markers, and personalize your own tiny house. Use packing or duct tape to reinforce box seams if it needs to be a bit sturdier. Would it look a lot like Tiny, or are there things you would change? Creating a tiny house with friends adds a teamwork dynamic to the play time, and makes it extra fun.
