SIMPLE TIPS FOR AN UNSTOPPABLE NEW YEAR
Don’t Skip Your Morning Meal
I know, I know… We’ve been hearing it since grade school. ‘Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.’ And while that may not necessarily be true for everyone, my family and I generally do better if we start the day with something in our bellies. I am so NOT a morning person though, so it’s been a struggle to find something easy, healthy, and tasty that we can all enjoy. One item that definitely fits the bill is Healthy Choice’s new morning bowls.
These morning power bowls come in super yummy flavor combinations, like Pesto + Egg White Scramble or Roasted Red Pepper + Egg White Shakshuka. The ingredients are selected for their flavor as well as nutritional value, which makes grabbing one of these quick protein meals from the freezer a no-brainer. Each contains 10-15g of protein and 3-5g of fiber, so you’ll start your morning with a full belly and plenty of energy to keep you going.
Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate
This is a task I really need to work on, and it truly is so important. Our bodies need to be hydrated to function at their best. (And no, I’m not talking about peak athletic performance here. I’m simply talking about making it through the day with the kids.) The simple truth is that sugary drinks and sodas full of empty calories aren’t going to help our bodies perform well. It’s totally worth the effort to grab yourself a water bottle you love, and make sure to keep it filled throughout the day. Trust me, you’ll notice the difference as the new year wears on.
Be Sure To Rest
An exhausted body simply can’t keep up. When you’re overworked or fatigued, you’re more likely to get sick, and your mood will likely suffer as well. Do yourself (and everyone around you) a favor and be sure to rest up. This doesn’t have to mean daily cat naps, or anything crazy. Head to bed at a reasonable hour each evening, and try to stick with a regular sleep schedule. (I’m a mom, I get it- I want that quiet time late at night too. It’s a balancing act, for sure.) Avoid phones, televisions, tablets, and other screens in the hour before bedtime, and try to avoid working in bed. Treat your need to rest with respect it deserves, and you may find yourself sleeping more soundly… And ultimately, waking up better prepared to face what the new year brings!
Keep The Veggies Coming
It’s a simple fact that we all know well- you’ve got to be eating your produce regularly to be sure you’re giving your body the healthy nutrients and fuel it needs. And as much as I try to meal plan and create balanced dinners that my family will love, there are nights when I just don’t want to stress. Nights like those (and some lunch times too!) I find myself reaching for Healthy Choice vegetarian or vegan power bowls.
These veggie bowls feature pre-made combinations of vegetables, legumes, and whole grains in flavorful combinations, so I’m sure to find something everyone in my family will love. Each bowl is filled with 10-16g of vegetarian-friendly protein, as well as 7-16g fiber, so we’re not tempted to snack immediately after eating. There are so many tasty options available, like White Bean + Feta Salad, Mango Edamame, and Falafel + Tahini, which means my kids and I get to try flavors that I’m not as likely to prepare on my own. And since every day is Earth Day around my house, we love that even the bowls themselves are plant-based and totally recyclable.
Get Moving
I know guys, it’s the middle of winter. It’s pretty cold and miserable most days here in upstate New York. The daylight hours are practically nonexistant, so getting up and getting moving can be tough. I promise though, it’s totally worth it for both your physical and mental health to find ways to incorporate movement and activity into your daily routine. I’m not going to preach about the gym or anything crazy. All I’m suggesting you start with is little things, like taking a walk with the kids, or helping them build a snowman in the yard. Small movements add up, and help your body stay in healthy shape. (Not to mention set a great example for the little eyes that are always watching!) Commit to getting moving in the new year, and you’ll likely find yourself more filled with energy when spring (eventually) arrives.
